We're (I'm?) moving to greener pastures at Wordpress/Comicpress. But I (we?) need time to set up, so watch this space!
So like, guess what - I'm married now! To a really, really, great guy. We've been really busy trying to get our new flat set up, but once we move in, hopefully, I'll have more time and space to update Bobbin properly, and maybe even work on brand new comics altogether! So... wish us luck. :)
I am accepting any freelance illustration or cartooning work that you're willing to throw my way. Just drop me an email.
Oh my god, I updated... TWICE... this year?! Looks like we've reached an all time low in our seven years on earth. New Year's Resolution: To Do Bobbin Good.
Wen, our faithful Australian friend-fan, was in town lately. We met up and reminisced about them good ol' days, when music was free and youth was plentiful. We first met in June 2002 (you can scroll back to the archives if you like). Here's us then and us now:
As you can see, no major change, except that I became a man and he became a woman. But, we deal.
The strip updating system is well and truly screwed now. So I'll just settle for piling strips one on top of the other until your browser crashes.
I also changed my contact email, so do drop me a line or get me on Facebook or something like that. And I apologise if I haven't replied to your previous emails - do send them again.
Til the next time - hopefully a soon time! - Joyce
Wait, is it next year already..?
Well guys, I've graduated and am finally back in home sweet home, working for government sweet government. Last semester was really stressful for me, which sucked out a lot of Bobbin-inspiration from my normally febrile (!!!) mind. Work provides its fair share of stress too, but I finally realised that I couldn't continue letting things like that get in the way of my passions (referring to the comic - ahem.) So... here I am! Wakey-wakey! :)
Apologies - there seems to be something wrong with the strip updating system, so we've temporarily lost the strip prior to this one.
I just felt the need to announce to the internet how incredibly hot this Rosalyn Lee is. And this is coming from a (to my knowledge) heterosexual girl. I feel bad for Xiaxue 'cos co-hosting alongside this tall, willowy woman with such effortless screen charisma and great radio voice must suck. She's nice, too, to play along with the Chelsea+Balestier guy instead of rolling her eyes at him. Three things:
1) Does anyone know what radio station she DJs for? They never say. Also, she is not Google-able.
2) Tell them to go easy on the eye make-up!
3) Girls Out Loud has no actual content. It has better production value than The Simple Life, so why can't they spend that extra money to have some real substance in the show? Right now, I feel the only people who watch either love/hate Xiaxue or love Rozz (no one hates Rozz, come on). Does anyone actually care about the "tips" they dish out?
I just spent the entire past week churning out an 84 frame comic strip that can be read in 3 minutes. Oh, woe is the plight of the Artist... But anyway, I did this as part of a food class I'm in now, and I really do believe the views espoused. People should care less about how they, or others, look, and more about how people actually are. Take a peek and pass the link on if you think it's educational!
Contrary to what the update status of this site might have suggested, Bobbin ain't dead. Hard to believe, I know, but don't you think she would've asked your permission first before keeling over and foaming from the mouth? Hmmmm? :)
Lemme give you a quick rundown of what I've been up to:
* Finishing off my very last semester at college, which means ECONOMICS SENIOR ESSAY. For all you guys who aren't seniors yet, you can look forward to using this magical new phrase to counter anything. For example, if your friends ask you why you never leave your room, you say, "Eh, people don't need to do senior essay is it?" and look pissed. "Hey Joyce, would it kill you to do your laundry more than once a month?" Answer: "Eh, people don't have senior essay one is it?" "Joyce, why are you always twirling your hair and gazing into the distance?" - You know how to respond.
* Rabidly refreshing and re-refreshing eBay listings so I can get a good deal on a tablet PC. What's the meaning of "pen and paper" again..?
* Perparing a completely new comic project! Lots of exciting details in the planning but I'll be sure to keep you guys duly informed. Meanwhile, the picture above should serve as a nice teaser... Yes I'm mean like that.
Hang in there fellow Bobbinites! In the meantime, check out this band The Hussys - "We Expected," especially. The guitarist used to be from The Supernaturals, who wrote "I Wasn't Built To Get Up At This Time," the most lyrically meaningful song on earth to date.
Bobbin moved servers, but I didn't know how to re-import the mySQL (?) database and so, the strip navigation system is all screwed up. Hopefully we'll have it fixed ASAP. Thanks to everyone who alerted me. DON'T PANIC!!! (I am panicking myself.)
Ok ok... before you beat me up for today's strip (hurhurr), consider this: you know how when you drink bubble tea, the cup is sealed with a plastic lid that usually has some kind of "joke" or "riddle" written on it in Chinese for the sake of "entertainment"? The last one I had went something like:
Q: Why are giraffes the most economical animals to keep as pets?
A: THEIR NECKS ARE SO LONG, IT TAKES A LONG TIME FOR THEM GET HUNGRY!!!
Yah. Now aren't ya glad to have me? And don'cha wish your bubble tea cup was funny like me??? Huh? Don'cha??
I watched X-men 3 TWICE in 24 hours. The best mutant is the one who has the power to look like a transvestite! (or Prince, depending on your worldview.)
Also, sorry for the super delayed update. I hope this super long strip pacifies the gods of continually disappointed webcomic fans.. oh, and the fans themselves!
In my short life, I have realised that there are some things which are REALLY good initially, but get REALLY bad very quickly. For example,
1. Strawberry pocky. (X)
2. California corndogs. (X)
3. Quaker oats.
4. Birthday noodles.
5. Heavy metal.
6. Punk.
7. Jazz.
8. Krispy Kreme.
Also, check out Radiohead's cover of Nobody Does It Better (Carly Simon original) if you can. Somehow, Thom Yorke manages to take a teasing ballad and transform it into a disturbing ode to abusive relationships. I think!
Last night I suddenly realised - "Hey Joyce, you're in school. And you have homework!" So I don't think I will be uploading comics as often as I have for the past 3 weeks. I'll probably be updating with little snippets of stuff though, so check this box frequently.
For example, a fellow Bobbin reader recently alerted me to the fact that Toshiba has made NeneWarlus into an mp3 player-cum-flash drive. It's pretty cute don't you think?!
But geez, where are your lawyer-friends when you need them..?
Watched House of Wax that night. It was so ridiculous, because the backstory for Paris Hilton's character was absolutely irrelevant. The backstory: she suspects she might be pregnant, and is debating about how to tell her boyfriend during the roadtrip. Fine, right?
Friend of Paris: You've got to tell him sooner or later.
Paris: Yeah, but I'd hate to ruin the mood. I think I'll tell him after the trip.
Friend of Paris: Ok.
Later that night, in the tent:
Paris is engaged in a gratuitious extended striptease scene.
Boyfriend of Paris: mmmm...
They start making out.
Boyfriend of Paris: (more approving noises)
Paris (interrupting): Ok, I didn't want to ruin the mood, but I think I'm pregnant.
I think someone should write a script for a horror movie where the characters don't act totally unrealistically (e.g. "DON'T GO INTO THE ROOM STUPID GIRL! RUN! RUN! WHY ARE YOU GOING IN? DON'T! DON'T INVESTIGATE! DON'T.... AAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!"), but still manage to get found and slaughtered. That would be truly terrifying, no?
Instead of singing MY HUMPS! MY HUMPSMYHUMPSMYHUMPS!!, I thought we'd do the search engine hits thing for a change. Here we go!
· "super funny webcomic" - correct.
· "bad comic strips" - incorrect.
· "slave comic strips" - open to debate.
· "blood slave webcomic" - ditto... wait, what?
· "nina persson gold teeth" - she only has one, and reveals it very nicely in the Burning Down The House video. I hope you appreciate the following animated GIF, because making it entailed going through frames, one by one, that were composed entirely of Tom Jones' face. I nearly died.

· "singaporean airhostess photos" - wrong webcomic. (ps: Pudding, if you're out there, please come back! We miss you!)
· "vomit japanese girl noodles video" - probably on YouTube.
· "brian molko different coloured bodily fluids" - probably on YouTube.
· "sex yik" - I hope not on YouTube!
· "my mother is a terrible woman" - obviously lacks Asian Values.
· "bobbin vaginal" - also lacks Asian Values... wait, what???
Hi kids! It's been long, hasn't it? I was really stressed out before spring break, but now I'm back from outer space (London and Cairo, actually) and raring to go. I think. Anyway, I do hope you like WereBobbin!
My PHP prince is still hard at work on the commenting system, so we will content ourselves with old-school, one-sided communication in the meantime. STOP WHINING!
I am going to irresponsibly go off on spring break for 2 weeks and not update! Not that it takes spring break for me to neglect Bobbin, but I just thought I should inform you. Bon voyage and I hope you all lead lovely and lifely lives in the meantime. Hopefully, when I'm back, so will the commenting system, not to mention something new to comment on :)
Hi guys, I had to turn off the comments because the spam problem was just getting too horrible and way out of hand. Don't worry, whatever you've written is all saved and the comments will be back, I promise. If you have anything to vent, try using the forum - it's not as dead as you think! Meanwhile, I sit here and sing "some day my (PHP) prince/ss will come."
ONE STEP FURTHER FROM HEH-VUHN BAY-BE! ONE STEP CLOSER TO HYIAAALLL!!! AH SAID BAY-BEEE YOU'RE JUST AN ANY-MOHL!!! You gotta love Ronin. You also gotta buy their album, "Do Or Die". Even if you don't like rock & roll as a genre (like me), you will like it. I mean, they went to RGS and the RGS girls were almost body surfing in their school uniforms. Also, their album cover has scratch-it-off dollar signs over a girl's nipples. In the words of a lobster: WHAT MORE IS YOU LOOKING FOR? (MTV Asia has all their songs, listen now!)
Alright, trivia of the day: did you know that Kiera Knightley acted as Queen Amidala's decoy handmaiden (the one who got killed almost immediately in Episode II), and that Sofia Coppola (director of Lost In Translation) was one of the handmaidens as well?!
A christmas/new year strip, as promised. Ladies & Gentlemen, I believe we have achieved time travel.
Watched Match Point yesterday. It was FANTASTIC! And not just because of Scarlet Johansson. It put a smile upon my face. I mean the movie, not her figure.
So, lemme give you a (more or less) truthful account of what has been happening between the past entry and now:
1) Went to Thailand: Bangkok & Pattaya for a week. Lesson learned: DO NOT TRUST ANYBODY WHO CAN SPEAK ENGLISH. But very nice otherwise! Highly recommend Bangkok City Inn. It's ridiculously cheap, smack in the middle of town, and really quite posh considering the price you pay.
2) Bumped into none other than Xiaxue & co at that fateful New Year's Eve (foam) party. Ground that was blogged on, was worshipped. She reads Bobbin! Didn't get to see any molestation. However, the ice cream man was pushing his motorbike through the crowd and people sprayed fake snow on his ice cream carriage. I thought that was cute.
3) Cleared TONS of spam off the website. What's up with these people?! Anyway, if you see spam, don't reply, because I'll check often and clear it away.
Ok, there is other stuff but there is also a time and place for everything. See you later!
I didn't realise it'd been THAT long since I last updated. My apologies - had a super busy semester. But everything's ok now! We went to the new national library yesterday. I love it. Especially the architecture. If you stand at the bottom and look up, you feel as though you are in a sci fi landscape and the spaceship is waiting for you to board! If you stand at the top and look down, then you just feel like peeing. And they have this sky garden and you can stand there and look at the angmoh sunbathers at the Hotel Intercontinental pool and wave at them!
Hey guys, guess what?! Bobbin is available on handphones! To tell you the truth, I have no idea how it all works - or even looks, since I'm not in Singapore - but I understand I will get some kind of commission if it sells enough. For now, the mobile strips aren't new material: they're old-school Bobbin style, start from the first fully-coloured strip and are very mildly reordered. So just surf on over and check out the other titles as well, they look kind of interesting! I also like very much how I have been bestowed the new pen name "Jocelyn Aik", free of charge.
This is SUPER FUNNY. Have you guys known about it all along and not told me about it? I'M IN AMERICA SO NEWS SPREADS SLOWLY!!! I really like the one with the RGS girls' blood on the floor.
It's so heartening to see so many Singapore webcomics coming out. You know, Colin Goh once told me (and I hope I'm not misquoting him) that reading comics like Bobbin made him feel that there was hope in the future of Singapore. It meant so much to me, because I grew up reading his comics. And I mean, I like to think of myself as the Mamasan of Singapore Webcomics (just humour me). Now it's like I'm the lao3 jiao4, VD ridden and HIV positive, sitting at the back of the room watching all the nubile new china chicks flood in and sapu everything. But you know what? As long as it's good for the industry, it's good for me. As the Powerpuff Girls sing: Love makes the world go round.
Did you know that Friendster now allows you to see who EXACTLY has been looking at your profile? And how many times? This is indeed a sad day for all internet stalkers. I think this calls for a minute of silence.
In the course of my extensive research for today's strip, I'll have you know that I had to visit at least one "crotpan.html". See the kinds of things I do for you? Anyway, in keeping with the theme - is there anyone besides myself who REALLY ENJOYS touching those new fangled silicon bras they have in the shopping centres? We should get together and form a support group, hurhurhurhurrr
More importantly, The Cardigans are releasing a new album, "Super Extra Gravity"!! AND THE VIDEO FOR THEIR FIRST SINGLE IS EXCELLENT!! Nina Persson acts domineering throughout (I especially like it when she raps on the drummer's cowbell with her mike, he he). She also wears her hair like a dowdy German bar maiden and flashes her infamous gold tooth while stomping around Franz Ferdinand style. A salad winks at you. Milk spills in slow motion, ala Judy & Mary. I AM SO EXCITED!!!
Hey, you guys have to forgive my tardiness in updating. I've spent the time in between moving back to the US. And I'm sure you know that when you fly from Singapore to America, you have to turn your watches forward 3 weeks!!
I was reading a whole bunch of trashy female magazines that Cherie gave me, and found one article on "HOW TO PARALLEL PARK PROPERLY". I was thinking to myself (after digesting the info of course, goodness knows I need it): Would you ever see that in FHM or Maxim??? My bet is Yes, but only when hell freezes over and we're eating ice cream made out of it.
Anyway, in response to overwhelming demand (three requests.), I went and found an mp3 to which the Ali-Bra Bra Theme Song can be sung. A great exercise in Cantopop! (5.1mb, WMA)
SAM WON!!! Oh man. Thanks so much to everybody who voted for him. Can you imagine? Thanks to you, I get to have cai fan da-baoed* for me BY A MALE MODEL! EVERY NIGHT! Oh yeah baby.
New strip coming soon, but probably Saturday or Sunday - mummy's been busy cooking something... (by "mummy" I am referring to myself).
* vegetables and rice, taken to go
My boyfriend is taking part in a competition and I am being held at gunpoint as I type this OUCH! It would mean the world to him if fellow Bobbin fans with Singaporean handphones and 20 cents to spare (or more!) would please, please, pretty pretty pleeeaaaaase vote for him by SMS so that he can win it!
He is contestant F5 and all you have to do is send an SMS to 77877 before 28th July (THAT'S LESS THAN ONE WEEK FROM NOW!) which goes like that: TNPFERIA F5 S1234567Z 91234567 Joyce if your name is Joyce, your IC number is S1234567Z and your handphone number is 91234567. The details are here.
Sam wins -> Sam happy -> Joycelyn happy -> Joycelyn make more (dirty jokes in) Bobbin strips
I do hope you enjoyed today's guest appearance of Yusof Ishak.
Fantastic Bobbin reader, AC, put up with all of my crap over several months and came up with ALL the PHP on this website, including a nifty new comments system which will let you guys leave your mark on every single Bobbin strip there ever has been and ever will come. He also made updating and archiving comics super easy and automated, so hats off to AC!
I've also moved from my school server to a new host, also sponsored by another kind Bobbin reader, which hopefully will not collapse.
